What is the title of your work?
What once was.
Summarise the work in 5 words
The evidence of the past.
Talk us through the process of creating your work
Capturing an infrared photograph is more or less taking a photo of the moment before the shutter was pressed. However fractional this split second is, I adopted the medium of infrared light as my 'Medium of the Past'. With this work, I aim to question the definition of a moment using in depth visual exploration of the past. With my projects, the journey of learning and exploration I take is just as important to me as the outcome itself. As I am used to working predominantly in photography, the making of this work taught me how to use a full spectrum infrared camera for film and how to create video using a camera stabiliser and a drone. This is always something I've wanted to be able to do and I always strive to learn new things with each project I set myself.
Talk us through your research for the piece
Talking to a friend studying aerospace engineering allowed me to fully understand the physics of infrared. This led to breakthroughs when developing my concepts. I always strive to keep myself motivated through collecting primary research. It is so easy to get lost inside research on the internet and forget how knowledgable the people around you are.
